From the Gallery's Australian collection, 22 significant artists have been selected. Their representation is extensive, and includes some of their most acclaimed masterpieces. On this occasion however, instead of being represented as individuals -- as was the case with last year's Australian Icons exhibition -- the artists are grouped in a deliberate exercise of comparisons.

Each association between one artist and another has its own telling emphasis. Comprising some 250 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures, the exhibition will reveal to varying degrees shared intentions and visual language, subject matter, sense of place, and in many cases a personal relationship.
