Magical realism
18 February - 2 April 2006
Twentieth Century Australian galleries, Ground Level

The notion of magical realism comes from literary studies primarily and encompasses the work of writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Salman Rushdie and many film-makers. In a sense photography has always had a magical relationship to realism. However some photographers who were working throughout the 1970s developed this relationship further, blurring the borders between dream and reality, with an especially poetic subtlety. Magical realism includes photographs by Robert Ashton, Robert Besanko, Kate Breakey, Ian Dodd and Victoria Fernandez.
