The Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship 2000
|
In 1999 Mrs. Beryl Whiteley generously made funds available to establish the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship. The inspiration for this annual Scholarship was the profound effect of international travel and study experienced by her son, Brett Whiteley as a result of winning the Italian Travelling Art Scholarship at the age of 20.
"Winning the scholarship put Brett in the right place at the right time. After 6 months in Italy, he arrived in London with a folio of studies and drawings to approach the art galleries. He could hardly believe his good luck when at the end of his first day he had an offer of a one man show at the Molton Gallery and a mixed show at McRoberts and Tunnard," said Mrs. Whiteley.
The winner of the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship receives $25,000 and a three month residence at a studio in Paris, administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This is the second Scholarship to be announced - the winner of the first, in 1999, was Alice Byrne.
The 2000 Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship will be judged by Edmund Capon, Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Barry Pearce, Head Curator of Australian Art at the Gallery, and artist Tim Storrier.
A selection of the finalists work will be on view at the Brett Whiteley Studio in Surry Hills from Saturday 9 September to Sunday 8 October 2000.
