2004 Dobell Prize for Drawing Finalists
View the list of finalists for the 2004 Dobell Prize for Drawing.The winner will be announced on Friday 20 August at 12 noon.This is one of the most coveted art awards in Australia. The judge of the 2004 Dobell Prize is eminent Australian artist John Olsen.

Allan Mitelman
Mitelman is one of Australia's foremost abstract artists. This exhibition surveys three decades of his work from the late 1960s to the present and is the first comprehensive survey of the his varied repertoire of drawings, prints and paintings on paper.

Acclaimed film director Peter Weir will announce the establishment of a new $25,000 art award in honour of Anne Landa on 11 February 2004 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Biennale of Sydney 2004

Brett Whiteley Key Works
This exhibition, held at the Brett Whiteley Studio in Surry Hills, includes a selection of major works from favourite themes in the artist's famous career. These include images of the artist's muse as nude model, his evocative landscapes and his iconographic panoramas of Sydney Harbour.

Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri (c.1932-2002) was one of the truly visionary Australian artists of the twentieth century. Through the sheer power and beauty of his paintings, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri introduced his culture to the rest of Australia and then, to the world.

Fantastic Mountains
FANTASTIC MOUNTAINS reveals the rich imaginations and sensitivities of the Chinese landscape painters in a variety of styles. All the paintings, most of which have not been seen outside China, are from outstanding collection of the Shanghai Museum, one of the most important museums in China.

Man Ray was one of the most famous and original artists of the 20th century. This is the first monographic exhibition of his work to tour Australia and is organised by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Plein-air painting in Europe 1780-1850
The Impressionists were not the first to paint in the open air. This exhibition captures the scores of artists in the late 18th and early 19th centuries - Belgian, British, Danish, French, German, Italian, Norwegian - who shared this passion: to capture spontaneous 'impressions' of nature by painting in the open air.

Robert Owen
An exhibition of selected work from 1994 to 2004 by senior Australian artist Robert Owen is this year's Balnaves Sculpture Project. The exhibition focuses on the connections between Owen's often rigorously minimal sculptural practice and his richly coloured and emotive abstract paintings.
