BIENNALE PROGRAM 16 JUNE - 21 JULY 2004
Explore, engage, experience the Biennale of Sydney After Hours at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
To celebrate the 14th Biennale of Sydney, Art After Hours, the Gallery's Wednesday evening events program, gives visitors the chance to engage with the contemporary and confront the controversial with talks, films, live music and art until 9pm.
From 16 June until 21 July, speakers such as the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, Sydney Morning Herald Good Weekend 'Modern Guru', Moyer Sayer Jones and Science Professor Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, discuss the reasonable and the emotional in this year's Biennale in entertaining and thought provoking talks in the Gallerys Central Court.
Following the talks visitors can...
View a free film from the Biennale inspired program South, compiled by Gallery film curator Robert Herbert. Borders, migration and boundaries constitute the central themes of these films, which are nominally set in the 'south', and offer a sense of our culture's limits and demarcations. Highlights include Treasures of the Sierra Madre 1948 (dir: John Huston), Touch of the Evil 1958 (Dir: Orson Welles) and That Obscure Object of Desire 1977 (Dir: Luis Buuel)
Enjoy a glass of wine and the contemporary menu at the ArtBar. FBi 94.5FM DJs add to the ambience with live mixes of experimental, contempo and jazz infused sounds from 7pm. A great location to absorb the night view of Woolloomooloo.
Experience the Art. See some extraordinary uses of the Gallery to display art as it grows from floors (in the form of polka dots of synthetic hair by Japanese artist Emiko Kasahara), or breaks through walls (Melbourne's Carolyn Eskdale's metallic structures pierce through a window to reach the Gallery's exterior surroundings). Free guided tours take visitors through the Biennale of Sydney exhibits at 7.30pm. General collection and other temporary exhibitions are also on view until 9pm.
All Art After Hours events free of charge. Entry fees apply for some exhibitions.
