Last year nearly 90,000 people viewed the inaugural Citigroup Private Bank Australian Photographic Portrait Prize. Over 560 entries were received and 50 works were exhibited.
This annual acquisitive $15,000 Prize coincides with the 2004 Archibald Prize. A selection of entries, and the winning work, will be displayed at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 26 March.
The Prize is open to photographers who are residents of Australia. All still photo-based art is considered, including all types of analogue and digital photography. Entries must have been taken in the 12 months prior to the entry closing date.
A judging panel consists of two Trustees of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Debra Phillips, Sydney Photographer and Naomi Cass, Director, Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne.
Through the support from the major sponsor, Citigroup Private Bank, the Prize has set a standard in contemporary photography and is firmly established on the national arts calendar.
"Photography is an exciting, cutting edge and dynamic frontier. In many respects the photographer represents the 'artistic entrepreneur'," said Jeremy Nestel, Head of Private Banking, The Citigroup Private Bank. "We are very proud to be able to support this initiative with Art Gallery of New South Wales."
"Following on from the overwhelming success of last year's inaugural exhibition, the Gallery is pleased to continue its association with Citigroup Private Bank in presenting one of Australia's important photographic portrait prizes," said Edmund Capon, Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. |
