COMMUNITY AMBASSADORS PROGRAM AT THE
ART GALLERY OF NEW SOUTH WALES
The Art Gallery of New South Wales has a significant new program to expand the Gallery's audience into the non-English speaking communities.
The first group of sixteen volunteer Community Ambassadors fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese and Vietnamese have completed the training program and provide free of charge tours of the Gallery's history and key works from its collections of Australian, Aboriginal, European, and Asian Art.
"We have an extraordinarily diverse audience who visit the Gallery, and recognise the need to broaden the experience for people not fluent in English. Through the tours and their links within the communities, the Community Ambassadors play a vital, on-going role in developing and familiarising even greater numbers of people to enjoy and appreciate our Gallery," said Edmund Capon, Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
The program aims to eventually expand and diversify, engaging more Community Ambassadors from other language groups.
