Church of Santo Spirito, Florence

pencil, carbon pencil

inscribed in pencil 'FLORENCE' lower left

"Construction [on Santo Spirito was] begun in 1436 under Brunelleschi, who died in 1446 a few days before the roof vaulting started. His successors were unable to reach any unified conception, and the façade remained as it was, to be completed later in its rather tedious form. Brunelleschi planned to place pillars at the front with an opulent four portal grouping. The flanking gable volutes are a late Baroque addition, while the present, smooth plaster-work dates from 1957. The campanile, one of the most elegant in the city, goes back to Brunelleschi but was completed only in 1566".
