Durga: Creating a Goddess
9–25 January
Tuesday–Sunday 11am – 4pm

Experience the amazing skills of West Bengali craftsmen as they create a spectacular image of the goddess Durga. Watch the whole process from the initial construction made from wood, clay and straw to the painting of the giant figures on the tableau. This is a sight rarely seen outside of Bengal.

A volunteer from the Bengali Association will be available to answer your questions Tuesdays and Saturdays 1-3pm.

Artists Welcome Ceremony
Monday 8 January 11am

The artists from the Crafts Council of West Bengal seek permission from the deities to start construction of the straw images in an offereing ceremony known as Pata Puja. They are welcomed by New South Wales potters.

Painting the eye ceremony
Sunday 21 January 3 – 4.30pm

Behind a curtain the master artist paints the eyes of the Goddess and once he feels they look alive reveals her in one dramatic moment. This ceremony, known as Chakshudan, is performed with accompaniment of a five-member Bengali drumming group.

Farewell the Goddess
26 January Australia Day & India Republic Day – from 11am

Farewell the Goddess as she leaves the Gallery, with offerings of flowers and fruit, drumming and dance, in celebrations led by the Indian community.
