Myles Birket Foster Barking, springtime

British watercolours of the Victorian era selected from the Art Gallery's extensive holdings in the area. Grand in scale, technically ambitious and highly finished, the 'exhibition watercolour' dominated Victorian art exhibitions where it was intended to compete with the grandeur of oil painting. Yet it remained a medium uniquely adapted to render the effects of light and the fleeting movement of nature.
