Guinness Contemporary Art Prize
Guinness Australasia, in conjunction with the Art Gallery of New South, is pleased to announce that Emma White from Sydney College of the Arts has won the inaugural Guinness Contemporary Art Prize.
The prize was developed to encourage excellence in young arts and multi-media students. It is the first of its kind in Australia to be run in conjunction with a major international contemporary exhibition - Fun Five Fun Story, the 6th Guinness Contemporary Art Project at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
All NSW tertiary undergraduate students currently enrolled at University or TAFE were invited to enter the Guinness Contemporary Art Prize. Emma was awarded a cash prize of $5,000 to assist with further projects. Her winning work will be exhibited at the Art Gallery of New South Wales alongside the current exhibition - Fun Five Fun Story.
Emma won the prize for her entry Synchronicity - an autobiographical document which attempts to recapture the bliss experienced in places and times long ago.
The entries were judged by Pascale Marthine-Tayou, one of the artists and curator of the Fun Five Fun Story exhibition; Anthony Bond, Chief Curator, Art Gallery of New South Wales; and Dounnia Lahoud, Guinness Australasia. The winner was selected on the basis of both artistic ability and potential.
The winning entry was selected because of the ambitious scope of the project including the successful articulation of sound and image. It manipulates the medium of video acknowledging its particularities while inducing a degree of reverie. In this way the work confirms a modernist approach to the structure while encouraging a degree of absorption by the viewer. Tony Bond, Chief Curator Art Gallery of NSW
