Durga:
Creating a Goddess 9–25 January
Tuesday–Sunday 11am – 4pm
Experience the amazing skills
of West Bengali craftsmen as they create a spectacular
image of the goddess Durga. Watch the whole process from
the initial construction made from wood, clay and straw
to the painting of the giant figures on the tableau. This
is a sight rarely seen outside of Bengal.
A volunteer from the Bengali Association will be available to answer your questions Tuesdays and Saturdays 1-3pm.
Artists Welcome Ceremony
Monday 8 January 11am
The artists from the Crafts Council of West Bengal seek
permission from the deities to start construction of the straw images in
an offereing ceremony known as Pata Puja. They are welcomed by New South
Wales potters.
Painting the eye ceremony
Sunday 21 January 3 – 4.30pm
Behind a curtain the master artist paints the eyes of the Goddess and once he feels they look alive reveals her in one dramatic moment. This ceremony, known as Chakshudan, is performed with accompaniment of a five-member Bengali drumming group.
Farewell the Goddess

January Australia Day & India Republic Day – from 11am
Farewell the Goddess as she leaves the Gallery, with offerings
of flowers and fruit, drumming and dance, in celebrations led by the Indian
community.
