Ochre reveals the breadth of the Gallery`s impressive collection of bark paintings, featuring the classic works commissioned by Dr Stuart Scougall and Tony Tuckson from north-east Arnhem Land in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A highlight of this period is Gurruwiwi Midinari's monumental Djaykung -- Files Snakes of c1960, which is displayed alongside more recent works from central and western Arnhem Land. These include David Malangi's complete suite of paintings of 1983 that document the artist's ancestral connection to the country where the Glyde River meets the Arafura Sea.
From 12 May, the Yiribana Gallery will reopen with a new display of works from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander collection, including a number of recent acquisitions.
