Wood and lino cuts of the 20s and 30s
13 March – 11 July 2010
Australian Collection Focus Room, ground level

This exhibition draws upon the Gallery's rich holdings of wood and lino cuts from the 1920s and 30s. It brings together colourful, boldly-designed woodcuts by such leading Australian artists as Margaret Preston and Thea Proctor and linocuts by Adelaide Perry, Dorrit Black, Ethel Spowers, Mabel Pye and others. The display provides an opportunity to see work from a period of great vitality in Australian printmaking, by artists excited at the potential of these techniques to create modern images. Some 30 prints will be included, on themes of play, the city, still life and landscape, highlighting the keen interest these artists shared – in colour, rhythm and design.
