Paths to abstraction education programs

Art Adventure Tour
Abstract adventures: Journey through the exhibition and marvel at the masterpieces. Explore how artists changed our way of seeing our world through abstract colour, mood and shape.
K–6 • 1 hour • Tuesday–Fridays • with the children’s guides • free with $5 exhibition entry

Da Vinci Project
Starting with art: Understanding abstraction A workshop tour for students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities which includes discussion, artmaking, role-play and the use of sensory materials. Pre- and post-visit activities are provided.
K–8 • 1 hour • Wednesdays–Fridays • 8 students or less • free with $5 exhibition entry

HOT ART: HOT abstraction An in-depth discussion tour for gifted and talented students including a one-hour practical workshop. Pre- and post-visit activities are provided.
Years 5–8 • 2 hours • Wednesdays • $270 per group of 15 or less (includes exhibition entry)

Study mornings
New ways of seeing: Consider how the first modern artists responded to a brave new world.
Years 7–9: 4 & 11 August • Years 10–12: 18 August • 10.30–11.30am • $8 per student (includes exhibition entry) • 9am exhibition viewing available for groups booked into these study mornings

Discussion tour
Questioning the real: Investigate why artists question the meaning of art; respond to key artworks in the exhibition.
Years 7–12 • 1 hour • $240 per group of 15 or less (includes exhibition entry)

French language tour
One-hour tour in English and half-hour of conversation in French inspired by the artworks in the exhibition.

Painting masterclass

An opportunity in the July holidays for individual students to enhance their painting techniques with artist Marisa Purcell.
12–15 year olds: Friday 9 July • 16–18 year olds: Friday 16 July • $40 (includes exhibition entry, tour and materials)

Art After Class
A guided tour of the exhibition with a Gallery educator for senior students, teachers and adults.
4.30pm Wednesdays in August • 1 hour • free with $5 exhibition entry for booked school groups, otherwise normal exhibition admission charges apply

Teachers preview
Paths to abstraction 1867–1917 and Alfred Stieglitz: the Lake George years
Monday 21 June • 5.15–7.30pm • $20 (includes curator’s insights, refreshments, resources, entry into Alfred Stieglitz and a ticket to Paths to abstraction)

Teachers enrichment day
Tour through the exhibition with curator Terence Maloon to uncover the importance of abstraction and the way artists changed and challenged our ways of seeing. Develop practical ideas for the K-6 classroom.
Friday 6 August • 9.30am–3.30pm • $85, AGS members $77 and tertiary students $42.50 (includes morning tea, lunch and educational material)
