Highlights
Crossing Country features an artform distinctive
to the Kuninjku people: the utilitarian, yet symbolically
loaded and compellingly beautiful weavings crafted
with milil, a tough tropical vine. Anchor Kulunba
was an accomplished artist whose voluminous mandjabu
(conical fish traps) demonstrated
his ceremonial custodianship of the artform. At
first glance, mandjabu bear an uncanny, mirage-like
resemblance to the human form. They are used by
Kuninjku to trap barramundi in the early dry season
in the area around Bulkay.
