Highlights

The American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land, 1948-49 was sponsored by the National Geographic Society and The Smithsonian Institute in co-operation with the Commonwealth of Australia. The expedition was led by Charles Percy Mountford and included scientists and naturalists who travelled to the mission settlements of Groote Eylandt, Yirrkala, Milingimbi and Kunbarlanja (Oenpelli).

The works on paper included in Crossing Country were collected at Kunbarlanja and contain a strong Kuninkju cultural and artistic association with familiar figures and subjects arranged on a plain background with fine body designs of dots and dashes. This particular work depicts Nadubi, an evil spirit woman who has stringray barbs protruding from her joints.
