This exhibition, jointly organised by the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Victoria, features nine paintings that demonstrate the scope and quality of the revolutionary vision of the great Baroque artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610). These are augmented with 59 paintings by Caravaggio's immediate followers, including Manfredi, Gentileschi, de la Tour, de Ribera and Ter Brugghen.
The works in the exhibition illustrate central themes of Caravaggio's world: victims of time, betrayal and death or, on a lighter note, of gullibility and human folly. Above all, they portray the pleasures and pains of love, both sacred and profane.
